Carpets

Carpets have been around for hundreds of years and eventually the process of making carpets was transferred to machines allowing production on a larger scale, but the way they are made hasn’t changed much. What has changed is the design and style, however some of the early designs are still available today. Twist pile and loop pile remain the most preferred throughout as they are the most cost effective to produce and usually fall into most consumers' budgets.

Carpets are made with either wool, man made materials or wool blend (a combination of both natural fibre and man made materials). Twist pile carpets are available in a variety of weights (the density of yarn and pile content per square inch), 32 and 42 ounce are most common and provide a satisfactory finish and can remain in good condition for around 6 or 7 years if well maintained.

Short pile, long pile, shaggy or velvet?

Short pile carpets offer good resistance to flattening, whilst long piles and shaggy piles can flatten sooner, creating traffic marks (areas that show the main walkways used i.e from the kitchen to the lounge and back again, then back again after that and so on). Heavier duty carpets such as 50 & 60 ounce carpets like Woven Axminster, velvet and plain twists offer a much longer life span that can be up to 25 years!

Loop pile carpets are made in and are available in similar styles and weights. These offer the consumer different texture and feel. When well maintained, these types of carpets can last equally as long as their twist pile cousins. But, one thing to bear in mind is the ability to remove stains from this type of carpet can be tricky as the soiling can remain underneath the 'loop' part of the pile. However, loop pile carpets can be a very affordable option when recarpeting your home on a strict budget and will still perform very well.
