Laminate Flooring

Laminate floors have been around since 1977, but not widely known of until the mid eighties. Since then, laminate flooring has seen several advances in quality, style, design and popularity. Much like other hard floors, laminate flooring is very easy to maintain with regular cleaning and sweeping, although wet mopping should be avoided as it will cause the surface to warp and distort over time. Manufacturers advise dry mopping techniques for general cleaning (laminate manufacturers offer special cleaning fluids for dry mopping). Laminate flooring is also relatively easy to repair, scratches and dents can be filled with colour matching repair kits or, if necessary, an entire plank can be removed and replaced. Most modern laminates (excluding budget types) have a very hard wearing and scratch resistant surface, making them strong enough for what everyday life will throw at them.

Laminate flooring is available in a variety of thicknesses, budget laminates tend to be 7mm or 8mm, whereas better quality laminates will be between 8mm and 13mm. The thickness of the laminate board does not necessarily denote its quality; a laminate floor at 8mm made by a reputable manufacturer will be sufficient enough for most families as the wear layer (the surface) will be strong and scratch resistant. You should be weary of companies that offer very thick laminates (10-13mm) at low prices as these may seem to be a good deal, but in most cases they tend to be of a poorer quality with very thin wear layers, thus making them very susceptible to premature wear, warping and general instability.

These days, laminate floors are available in a great many styles and designs to suit nearly every taste and once installed and cared for properly, can provide many years of good service.
